Day # 1 :We'll meet and depart from a convenient location: on the U.S. side of Tecate, San Ysidro, or perhaps an airport park&ride, whichever is most convenient for the group.
Traveling down the coast to El Rosario, we turn inland, stopping for a picnic lunch just north of Catavina. On through the Valley of the Boojum Trees, we arrive 4 hours later in
San Ignacio and the Ignacio Springs Bed & Breakfast. After getting situated in our yurts we have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the oasis. Go for a swim or a paddle,
or go stroll to the village square and see the church of San Ignacio de Loyola, one of the most beautiful missions in Baja California. Completed in 1786, the church is
constructed of rock from the nearby Las Tres Virgenes volcanoes. But don't be late getting back to the B&B, you won't want to miss the delicious dinner being served!
Day #2 :Today we venture north into the Sierra de San Francisco to the village of San Francisco where we will meet our guide and animals. Anyone choosing to ride a mule into the canyon
will remain with our guide. Anything to go on a burro will be left for our guide to organize. Those of us choosing to travel on foot will make our way to the canyon rim and
begin our descent. You never know what you may meet on the trail, we'll be sharing it with burros, goats, and cows, but our guide's approach will be heralded by his singing
and/or calling to the burros and mules. We'll step out of the way and let them pass. We'll eventually leave the cactus of the canyon wall and enter the citrus grove of the
canyon floor. We'll travel down a palm-lined streambed past cool pools until arriving at our campsite in El Cacarizo. Time to set up tents and relax as dinner is prepared.
Day #3 :After a hearty breakfast we'll follow our guide through the canyon to ancient petroglyphs and spectacular caves, the walls covered with paintings. We can only speculate as to who painted them,
and how, for they are massive and no signs of ladders or scaffolding have ever been found at the site. We'll see Las Flechas, Los Músicos, La Soledad, Boca de San Julio,
and the largest of them all, La Pintada.
Day #4 :Breakfast and then after we pack up, we travel out of the canyon, load up the truck, and make one last stop, to see Cueva del Ratón on our way back to the highway.
It's on to San Quintin, stopping for the night at the Old Mill. The restaurant next door serves the freshest seafood, try it with a bottle of wine from the Guadalupe Valley.
Day #5 :After breakfast we're on the road again, stopping in Ensenada for a wine tasting at Bodegas de Santo Tomas, Baja California's oldest winery, before heading back over the border.
